Reasons to Visit Salisbury
Diane's Story
Solo travel rating: 1 (1 is easiest, 3 is most difficult. Please see chart below)
Salisbury was a favorite stop on my journey. It's a lovely English town with great shopping in the old city, great pubs, and some of the best bakeries outside of France. There's plentiful art and art galleries throughout the town and the walkways along the River Avon were especially picturesque.
The incredible early English Gothic cathedral is worth several visits itself! In addition to the beauty of the architecture and adjoining cloisters, it houses one of the best copies of the Magna Carta on view to the public. An excellent cafe is on site as well.
There was so much to do and see and it was all within walking distance! I especially loved the old Manor houses like Mompesson House (setting of the movie, Sense & Sensibility). It had a good cafe where one could enjoy tea and scones in the peaceful and fragrant English garden. Sigh. Wonderful visit.
Oh…and Stonehenge is a short 8 mile ride away through the lovely English countryside!

Salisbury is a gem of English Heritage. A cathedral town in Wiltshire, it is home to the 13th century Salisbury Cathedral, built in the Early English Gothic style, and featuring Britain's tallest spire. Set on 8 acres of lawn, the cathedral also houses an original Magna Carta. There are also Neolithic settlement ruins in Salisbury.
About 8 miles down the road, you will find one of the wonders of the world, Stonehenge. Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites are a Unesco World Heritage property. Stonehenge is the most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world.
There is every reason for a visitor to England to visit this small town laden with history.
