Reasons to Visit Connemara

Connemara, in Ireland's northwest, is the country's most rugged region with lakes and bogs, mountains and beaches. It's an area that is largely wilderness, which is not common in Ireland. Irish and English are commonly spoken in the region. In fact, school children go there from across the country to take immersion classes in Irish.
Connemara makes a great getaway from Galway, which is an active, cultural center. It can be a day trip as I took with the Lally Bus Tour Company or you could go longer. Highlights of the tour were:
  • Kylemore Abbey:  Currently owned and run by Benedictine nuns the abbey was originally built as a gift from Mitchell Henry to his wife in the 19th century. In addition to the Abbey there's a miniature Gothic Church and a Victorian walled garden. This is where we stopped for lunch.
  • Leeann Village:  The 1990 film “The Field” was filmed there. It's a tiny village and so charming.
  • An Spidéal:  This village hosts students wanting to learn Irish. It has many traditional thatched roof homes and beautiful beaches.
