Reasons to Visit Easter Island
The culture and history of Easter Island are amazing. It has incredible scenery with cliffs, extinct volcanoes and pounding surf. It is very easy to get around, with a fairly cheap rental car, tours, and tour buses. It's also easy to get off the beaten track, away from other tourists, if you want to. The main sites are absolutely fascinating. The food is great food and there is an interesting museum.
Because I live in Australia, I flew to Easter Island via Tahiti. Otherwise, I would have had to go 8000 miles out of my way. This worked well, but there is only one flight a week. Hence, I was on Easter Island for two weeks, which ended up being about right for me.
I went hiking with Nomad Rapanui, a small private tour company. We visited amazing caves, and we walked the entire North Coast. We also hiked up to the Poike Crater. We saw a white statue in a cave and a site where the Rapanui women used to give birth. Everything was so untouched in these more remote areas. I also did two extended walks on my own. I felt totally safe, although I had to pay attention so I did not get lost!
