Reasons to Visit Salzburg
Salzburg is an absolutely beautiful town. Due to its compact Old Town, it is easy to navigate on foot with no need for a car or public transport (unless you want to explore the mountains outside of the town).
Salzburg is known for being the birthplace of Mozart, and a trip to Mozart's Geburtshaus is a must-see! The town squares are lovely, especially Domplatz, located just behind the cathedral. There's a large chess board, market stalls, and St Peter's Abbey is just behind it. It's a peaceful spot for a wander.
You shouldn't miss Hohensalzburg Fortress. Even if you don't go in the fortress, the views across the town are spectacular. It's only an easy ten-minute walk from the town center. Getreidegasse is a beautiful shopping street with lots of little arcades and passages to explore. For fans of The Sound of Music, you can even take a themed tour to see the film locations!
For younger travelers (and even older ones with a youthful streak) I would recommend staying at YoHo International Youth Hostel. It is reasonably priced, offers a wide selection of rooms (private and dorms, including female-only), it's in a great location, and it shows The Sound of Music every night!
Cafe Mozart serves a great hot chocolate, and the bakery on Residenzplatz has great cakes!
