WHAT IS THE ENNEAGRAM? The enneagram symbol is a circle marked by nine equally spaced points along the circumference, numbered 1 thru 9 in succession. The numbered points are connected by lines in specific patterns (1-4-2-8-5-7 and 3-6-9), representing two fundamental laws of the universe: the law of seven and the law of three.

The actual origin of the enneagram is unknown, but has been documented in the teachings of Russian philosopher Georges I. Gurdjieff (1870-1949). Gurdjieff taught that the enneagram contained the key to knowledge of eveything in the universe for those who knew how to read and interpret it. The Enneagram of Personality was developed by Oscar Ichazo in the 1960’s as a tool for defining nine different personality types corresponding to the points on the enneagram. It is this interpretation which has become the predominant area of study of this intriguing symbol. Both areas of study are relevant to the philosophy of Enneagram Records. In music, the law of three can be represented by the triad, which is the basis of chord construction, while the law of seven relates to the notes in a major scale. At the same time, each artist is identifiable by their personality type, and the music presented on their respective recordings offers a fascinating study into the relationship between types and their creative endeavors. There are a number of fine websites that deal with all aspects of the enneagram. For more information, check out our Links page. |
